A site sadly famous for the Scalabron Mine incident. Beneath the rocky outcrop of Lunetta, the Italians dug a mine tunnel; the Austrians a countermine tunnel. On June 8, 1917, at 5:30 PM, two days earlier than planned, likely due to lightning, the Italian mine exploded, causing the Austrian mine to also explode. 120 Italian soldiers of the Catania Brigade lost their lives, along with several officers who, from the Lunetta observation post, were studying enemy positions in preparation for the impending Battle of Ortigara.
