When the city was walled after 1259, the water of the Heiligenbergerbeek flowed into the walled city on the east side of the city. House Tinnenburg was built in the 14th century to defend this water passage. Tinnenburg, together with Huis Rommelenburg, formed the water gate in the city wall on the other side of the water. amersfoortopdekaart.nl/highpoints/binnenstad/tinnenburg/pointofinterest/detail

This imposing building also stands directly at the city gate Groot Tinnenburg, which dates back to the 14th century. It was originally the first city wall with a water gate, but this became superfluous with the second city wall.
