The St. Amelberg Basilica is a Romanesque church building and was once the monastery church of the Susteren Abbey. In 714, an abbey was founded on the Suestra estate, on the site of the current basilica, by Willibrord, Pepijn van Herstal and his wife Plectrudis, probably the oldest monastic foundation in the Netherlands. In the 11th century, the old abbey church was replaced by the current church in early Romanesque, Ottonian style. The abbey buildings, except for the church, were demolished in the course of the 19th century. The church was named Sint-Amelbergakerk in the 19th century, as a reference to Saint Amelberga, the first abbess of the monastery.

The Basilica of Saint Amelberg was built in the mid-11th century in the late Ottonian style. Before the year 1000, a small hall church already stood on the site of the current basilica. 7th-century sarcophagi were also found there.

Many saints, such as King Zwentibold and Amelberga, whose unique (typically Maasland) shrine can be admired in the treasury, were buried here. Textiles and silverware dating back over a thousand years are preserved in the treasury.

You will also find the Gospels from around 1020, one of the oldest books in the Netherlands. For more information or to book a tour, visit museumstiftsusteren.nl
