During a wave of crime in Oss, Gerard Hoekman, guard of the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee brigade, was murdered in 1893 by the Bende van Oss. In 1894 Arnoldus van de Laar (1826-1899), pastor-dean of the Grote Kerk, had the memorial erected at the church as a thank you for the restored peace and to fulfill a silent promise. The group of statues shows Mary as the central figure, who tramples a snake with an apple in its mouth, a symbol of victory over evil. She is flanked by two angels. The group was designed by the Bossche restoration architect and painter Lambert Hezenmans. (wikipedia)
