In July 1792, the explorer Alexander von Humboldt took over the mining offices in the Franconian Forest. He settled in Bad Steben and lived at Badstraße 2. The house still bears his name today. Von Humboldt significantly promoted mining in the region and was very successful in doing so.

But the welfare of the workers was also close to his heart. He established a mining relief fund, which offered workers financial security in the event of illness. He also opened a miners' school, where geology, mineralogy, and mining law were taught in the winter. It was the first workers' training school in Germany and can be considered a forerunner of today's vocational schools.

In 1795, Alexander von Humboldt left Bad Steben and pursued new challenges. His traces can still be seen in many places in the Franconian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains.

From 1792 to 1795, the naturalist Alexander von Humboldt lived in the former margravial hunting lodge in Bad Steben.

It was built by Johann Leonard Och, whose initials can be seen above the entrance door.

Today the building is privately owned.
