The bronze sculpture of Ulysses Dini was created in 1927 by Leonardo Bistolfi to commemorate, with admirable resemblance, the great mathematician, very dear to the city. Born in Pisa in 1845, he was a pupil of Ottaviano Mossotti at the Scuola Normale Superiore, where he graduated in mathematics, with a thesis on the theory of surfaces applicable in the field of differential geometry. For fifty-two years he was a professor at the University of Pisa and his first researches were aimed at infinitesimal and differential geometry, later he dealt with algebra and calculus. In 1900, parallel to his political career, he was elected director of the Scuola Normale Superiore of Pisa. He died in 1818 and was buried in the Campo Santo of Pisa. Among his illustrious students we remember Enrico Fermi, Nobel Prize for physics.
