On the Schorrebosberg, in the middle of the vast fields and fields, there is an old cherry orchard. This orchard was part of the Schorreboswinning, a farm of the former Nonnen-Mielen Abbey. In 2003, the Flemish government bought 9 hectares of agricultural land to provide the region with more forest. This is how the Schorrebos came into being. A cherry orchard was planted on this site and was part of the Schorrebos- or Scherboswinning. A monumental farm from the 18th century, owned by the former Benedictine abbey Nonnen-Mielen. In 2004, hundreds of families planted the first 'Stand up to Cancer Forest' in Limburg here. In the young 'Schorrebos' domain, oaks, hazels, hawthorns and blackthorns are given the space and time to grow into a beautiful piece of deciduous forest. In another place in the domain, a forest grows under an old poplar forest. At the end of February you will find wild daffodils blooming in the reserve. This is very exceptional for Belgium. To see wild daffodils you usually have to drive towards East Cantons or cross the border to the Eifel Mountains. But they also grow here! The wild daffodil is on the 'red list' of plants that are threatened in their existence. Another flavoursome feature in this area is the Kelsbeek. Like many regions in Flanders, this area also suffers from erosion and flooding.

The Kelsbeek was freed from its harness and was given the space to flood again. The Schorrebos has the privilege of welcoming a very elegant and special resident: the golden oriole. You can recognise the male by his very striking bright yellow chest and black wings and tail. The female opts for a green-yellow outfit. But despite their striking appearance, you will have to be very lucky to be able to admire this beautiful bird. After all, the golden oriole prefers to sit very high in the crown of a tree, hidden between the leaves. You will find him here in the 'warm' months. He spends the winter in Africa. Another, somewhat inconspicuous, resident of the Schorrebos is the woodcock. His brown plumage is a perfect camouflage. And with his long straight beak he drills holes in the ground in search of worms and insects. natuurenbos.be/natuurgebieden/schorrebos
