Opened in 1951, it is Britain's first purpose-built cycling tunnel. In fact there are two parallel tunnels respectively for pedestrians and cyclists, running under the River Tyne between Howdon and Jarrow. The tunnels are Grade II listed, they reopended in August 2019 after years of delayed refurbishment.

Fast and free way to get to the other side as a pedestrian or cyclist. But be careful, there are two separate tunnel tubes so that pedestrians and cyclists don't get in each other's way. Opening times are daily from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
