As perfectly as the Schluchsee fits into the landscape of the Upper Black Forest, you might think that it is a natural lake. The level of the original Schluchsee was around 30 meters below the level of today's lake. It only came into being in its current form through the construction of the dam, which was completed in 1932. Since then, Schluchsee has been the highest dam lake in Germany.
It is also the upper basin of the Häuser pumped storage plant, which in turn is part of the Schluchsee plant group, a sequence of reservoirs between Hausen and Waldshut, which are connected by pumping stations.

Next to the dam is a large parking lot where you can park for free. You can reach the ship landing stage and the kiosk via the dam wall. Besides boats, you can also rent bicycles here.
