Finds from the time of the Neanderthals, grave goods from old megalithic tombs, one of the oldest boats in the world and mysterious bog bodies: The Drents Museum in Assen is a treasure chest for anyone who wants to learn about the history of this region. But the collection of contemporary realists and the exciting temporary exhibitions are always worth a visit.

After the Battle of Ane (1227), the Cistercian monastery of Maria in Campis (or Mariënkamp) near Coevorden was founded as penance for the death of Bishop Otto of Lippe. After an exchange of goods in 1259, a new monastery complex was built on the Witten market on a sand ridge that grew into what is now Assen. As a result of the Reformation, the monastery was dissolved in 1602. The west wing of the former monastery building was then used for meetings of the board of the Drenthe region, among other things. During the 17th century, the building also housed the Etstoel, the predecessor of the court of justice. The building originally consisted of one storey and was raised in the 18th century.
