You have arrived at a historical place as a (silent) visitor.
In 1329, Jan Gheylinck founded the Carthusian priory of Sint Maartens Bos here. This councillor of the then Count of Flanders was very wealthy.
From the entrance gate to the Carthusian you will discover a number of still visible historical relics. You can lie down between the flower beds and fantasise about what has disappeared. Walk around and take in the site.
Also take a peek around the corner (back) because there is the Carthusian church, exceptional in this region with a Rococo interior. This church is actually the monastery chapel that was elevated to parish church in 1802.
A little further, opposite the atmospheric cemetery, you will see the municipal library with the bronze Carthusian statuette by Dirk De Middeleer from 1995. The Carthusian walking route starts here.
Before leaving the Kartuizer site it is recommended to enjoy a good 'Kartuizer beer', there is also Kartuizer liqueur (a green nectar of the gods, but very strong) - in café De Kartuizer ... Cheers!
