This arched bridge, with its handcrafted construction and massive balustrades made of granite boulders, was built in 1802 under the Danish King Christian VII. His monogram and the year are visible on the keystone. Like the identical bridges in Trittau and Reinbek, the structure served to secure the border of the Duchy of Holstein against Saxe-Lauenburg, which was under the control of the English crown. Denmark was involved in military conflicts with Great Britain during the Napoleonic Wars.
