It is not known when the first church was built in Oldersum. Around 1400, the local residents built a single-nave Gothic-style brick church on the highest point of the village mound. Presumably it had a previous building made of wood. In the church there was a burial vault for the Oldersum chiefs. Until the Reformation, Oldersum belonged to the Diocese of Münster, Propstei Emden.
