Bienrode is first documented in 1031 as Ibanroth (from "Iban", genitive of the Old Low German male name "Ibo", and "red", clearing settlement). The village, which was built on the edge of the Schunteraue during the older period of the 9th century, had three arable fields, four Kotsassen farms, three Brinksitzer houses and a watermill (1), according to preserved records from 1546 and 1754, respectively. At its center was the built before 1200 Romanesque church (2), whose tower served as escape and attachment tower in Schuntergrenzbereich.
