The Bornekamptal in Unna is an idyllic local recreation area that is ideal for hiking and cycling tours. The Kortelbach, which flows through the valley, shapes the landscape significantly and creates a natural atmosphere. Along the stream you can find moisture-loving plants such as purple loosestrife and meadowsweet, while the surrounding deciduous forests are dominated by pedunculate oaks, red beeches and hornbeams. For hiking enthusiasts, the Bornekamptal offers several signposted circular routes, including Route A2 of the Sauerland Mountain Association (SGV), which leads through the valley and the district of Billmerich. Another highlight is the Unna Panorama Trail, which leads from the city center through the Bornekamptal to the Bismarck Tower and offers impressive views of the surrounding area. Cyclists can reach the Bornekamptal via the RadKreisUnna, which leads directly into the valley. At the northern entrance to the area is the Bornekamp outdoor pool, which is a refreshing stopover, especially in summer. The Bornekamp valley also plays an important role as a fresh air corridor and a quiet zone for the city of Unna. However, climate change and intensive recreational use are taking their toll on the area. It is therefore important to stay on the designated paths, respect nature and not pick plants or leave any rubbish behind. For those interested in history, the valley also offers cultural attractions such as the Jacobsquelle, a historic water source that was set in stone in 1876.
