Leaving Basse-Bodeux towards Trois-Ponts, you will discover small caves at the foot of a slope. These caves open into an unusual-looking rock: it appears as if small pebbles are encased in red cement. This rock, very rare in this region, unique in Belgium, is what geologists call a "pudding stone". This name has its origin in English (Puddingstone) because the stone is very similar to this pastry, a compact mass of raisins and candied fruit.
The "Pudding Stone of Malmedy" is very old (older than the dinosaurs). It is thought to have formed between 298 and 252 million years ago.
This puddingstone only occurs on a narrow strip of 22 km long and 2.6 km wide, in a north-east - south-east direction between Bévercé and Basse-Bodeux via Malmedy and Stavelot.
