Established in 1981 on the initiative of cross-border inhabitants on the occasion of the first edition of the Odprta meja - Open border initiative, it has become a constant tradition ever since.

The path corresponds to the ancient salt road, used for centuries by merchants from Carniola to reach the Trieste salt pans through Zaule. Legend has it that it is most likely the same path used by Martin Krpan (a legendary Slovenian character) who smuggled salt from Istria on his mule. The walk along the friendship path can start from Bagnoli della Rosandra-Boljunec, following the CAI path n.1 up to Bottazzo-Botač. From here, cross the bridge that once marked the border between Italy and Slovenia and continue following the signs to Beka-Ocizla. A beautiful path through woods and karst land.
