The former station reception building was built in 1875 in the classical style on the branch line from Niederhone to Eschwege of the Bebra-Friedländer railway. This connection was of great economic importance for the city. For many decades, the shuttle trains to Eschwege West station ran from here. Passenger services were discontinued in 1985, and the station was history. Eschwege West near Niederhone was now "the" station for Eschwege. In 2009, almost 25 years later, Eschwege was reconnected to the rail network with the opening of the new city train station. The Waldorf school is located in the old station reception building.

Eschwege has been accessible by rail since October 30, 1875. The last steam locomotive to pull a scheduled passenger train to Eschwege ran on June 2, 1973. With the discontinuation of passenger train service to Wanfried in 1981 and all passenger train service from Eschwege to Kassel on May 31, 1985, the station became history after more than 100 years.

After almost 25 years of hibernation, Eschwege was reconnected to the rail network on December 12, 2009, and is now called Eschwege Stadtbahnhof.
