Dambeck Abbey near Salzwedel was founded in 1224 as a Benedictine monastery. It was an important religious institution in the northern Altmark region and was under the protection of the region's noble families. The monastery church, built in the North German Brick Gothic style, still bears witness to the site's former importance. With the Reformation, the monastery was secularized in 1542. However, the convent continued to exist for a while as a Protestant women's convent. Later, the monastery was transferred to a school administration and served various secular purposes. In modern times, particularly during the GDR era, the site was used, among other things, as a boarding school.

Since the 1990s, the complex has been inhabited and managed by a Lutheran brotherhood. The community practices organic farming and maintains the site's spiritual heritage. Today, Dambeck Abbey is a culturally and historically significant place where history, architecture, and spiritual life intertwine in a special way. The complex is open to visitors and offers insights into the history and monastic life.
