    Hiking

Entrance to the cave is pretty straight forward; you will arrive at the back of the cave once you walk up the small rock walkway. If you wish to view the ruins, keep to the right ledge and walk straight out of the cave. The ruins are still in good condition, but do not touch them or run your hands over the rock walls!

    Hiking

The Subway Cave in Boynton Canyon is a very popular attraction.
You can take very nice photos and films here.

The ascent and descent in the fissure is a bit triggy. There is an easier climb to the left of the crevice and to the right of the cliff top Indian dwelling. However, to get into the Subway Cave afterwards, you have to walk around the ledge and be free from giddiness.

I became aware of the Subway cave through the following very nice YouTube video and it became my number 1 destination !!!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Subway Cave and Ruins trail suitable for families with young children?

While the main Boynton Canyon Trail is generally moderate, the final approach to Subway Cave involves some scrambling and navigating a narrow ledge, which can be challenging for very young children or those not comfortable with heights. Hikers with children should assess their comfort level with these sections. The ancient ruins require careful respect and supervision to ensure they are not disturbed.

Are dogs allowed on the trail to Subway Cave and Ruins?

Yes, dogs are generally allowed on the Boynton Canyon Trail, which leads to Subway Cave. However, the final scramble into the cave and the narrow ledge walk to the ruins can be difficult or unsafe for some dogs. Always keep your dog on a leash and ensure they are capable of handling the terrain. Remember to pack out all pet waste.

What are the specific challenges hikers might encounter on the way to Subway Cave?

The main Boynton Canyon Trail is moderately challenging. The most difficult sections are the final approach to the cave itself. This involves a short, steep scramble up a rock fissure to enter the 'subway' opening. To reach the Sinaguan ruins, hikers must navigate a narrow, exposed ledge that requires a good sense of balance and can be intimidating for those with a fear of heights. There are options for easier climbs to the left of the crevice, but the ledge walk remains.

Do I need a permit or reservation to hike to Subway Cave and Ruins?

No, a specific permit or reservation is not required to hike to Subway Cave and Ruins. However, a Red Rock Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required for parking at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead. These passes can be purchased at various locations in Sedona or at self-serve machines at trailheads.

What should hikers wear and bring for the Subway Cave trail?

Hikers should wear sturdy hiking shoes with good grip, as the terrain can be uneven and rocky, especially near the cave entrance. Layers are recommended due to temperature fluctuations. Bring plenty of water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a camera. A small backpack is useful for carrying essentials, and gloves can be helpful for scrambling sections.

How can I find the Subway Cave entrance and the Sinaguan ruins once on the Boynton Canyon Trail?

Subway Cave is located approximately two miles from the Boynton Canyon Trailhead. After about 1.5 miles on the main trail, you'll look for a less obvious turn-off to the left. This unmarked path leads to the cave. Once at the cave, you'll scramble up a rock walkway to enter. To view the ruins, keep to the right ledge and walk straight out of the cave opening. It's advisable to use a detailed trail map or a GPS-enabled app like komoot to navigate the unmarked sections.

What are the parking options for Subway Cave, especially during peak times?

The primary parking is at the Boynton Canyon Trailhead. This lot fills up very quickly, especially on weekends and during peak season. Arriving before mid-morning is strongly recommended. If the main lot is full, overflow parking may be available further down the road, but this will add extra distance to your hike. Consider carpooling or utilizing shuttle services if available during busy periods.

How crowded does Subway Cave and Ruins get on weekends or during peak season?

Subway Cave is a very popular attraction and can get extremely crowded, particularly on weekends, holidays, and during Sedona's peak seasons (spring and fall). Expect to share the trail and potentially wait for photo opportunities at the cave. To avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting on a weekday or arriving very early in the morning.

Are there any cafes or accommodation options near Boynton Canyon?

Boynton Canyon is home to several resorts and hotels, including the renowned Enchantment Resort, which offers dining options. In West Sedona, about a 15-minute drive away, you'll find a wider selection of cafes, restaurants, and various accommodation types, from budget-friendly motels to upscale hotels and vacation rentals.

What are the geological features that make Subway Cave unique?

Subway Cave is a distinctive rock formation carved into the red sandstone of Boynton Canyon. Its unique 'subway-shaped' entrance is a result of erosion, creating a curved, tunnel-like opening. The red rock itself is part of the Schnebly Hill Formation, known for its vibrant colors due to iron oxide. The cave's position within the canyon also offers panoramic views of the surrounding dramatic red rock landscape.

Are there other trails or 'hidden gems' similar to Subway Cave in the Sedona area?

Sedona is rich with unique rock formations and trails. While Subway Cave is one-of-a-kind, hikers looking for similar experiences might enjoy Soldier Pass Cave, which also features a unique cave formation and ancient ruins. Other trails like Fay Canyon Arch or Devil's Bridge offer impressive natural arches and stunning views, though they don't have the same 'subway' characteristic.

Is Subway Cave and Ruins suitable for a winter hike?

Winter can be an excellent time to visit Subway Cave, as temperatures are cooler and crowds may be slightly smaller than in peak seasons. However, be prepared for potentially icy conditions, especially in shaded areas or on the scramble sections, particularly after snowfall or freezing temperatures. Always check the weather forecast before heading out and dress in warm layers.
