The nature reserve was created as a military exclusion zone. Already before the Second World War as Dortmund-Brackel air base, later used by the British Army of the Rhine and the German Armed Forces, the site was inaccessible for decades.
The nature reserve consists of the Bushei forest, a pure deciduous forest with old oak and hornbeam stands, interspersed with beech and forest millet, open grass areas extend to it, including the former pasture of the officers' horses and the remains of bunker systems and fenced shooting ranges as well as several ponds. The area is surrounded by farmland.
