The origins of the castle probably go back to the Frankish period and originally had a military function. It was an important post between the lands of Mechelen, Grimbergen and Rumst. The lords of that time actively participated in the political and military life of Brabant. The current castle was built in the 15th century.

The first known owner was Hendrik van Ophem (from Relegem). In the Middle Ages it was owned by the Berthout family and from 1450 by the Carondelet family. On 21 April 1676 Constantijn Huygens jr. was stationed there with the Dutch army and he made a drawing of the castle in his personal diary. During the French invasion of 1747 it was in disrepair but it was renovated not much later by Count de Baillet, but it lost its appearance as an impregnable fortress. Today it is owned by the t'Kint de Roodenbeke family.
