Unfortunately, there is no information sign on this forest island that indicates the meaning and origin of the "Hontheim Cross"... 🤔

I therefore assume that in this case reference is made to the municipality of Hontheim ❓

    >

"The municipality of Hontheim with the districts of Wispelt, Krinkhof and Bonsbeuern has approx. 807 inhabitants, is surrounded by the Üß and Alf streams and is located on the edge of the Kondelwald on a 420 m high plateau in the southern Vulkaneifel.

A spacious natural landscape, alternating between open fields and wooded areas, framed in the south by the Kondelwald with its extensive forests and abundance of wildlife, in the north-east and in the west by the romantic valleys of the Üß and Alf streams and in the north-west as part of the unspoilt Vulkaneifel with their maaren

The municipality of Hontheim, with around 2,000 hectares of forest and around 70 km of forest and hiking trails, offers those looking for relaxation all the options for an unforgettable holiday.

The B 421 federal highway runs through the town. The A1 runs to the west. When arriving by train, Trier-Koblenz railway line, stop at Ürzig-Bahnhof or Wittlich HBF.

    History of Hontheim

The first documented mention dates back to 1138.

In 1143 the Springiersbach monastery had a pension in Hundheim.

1193 confirmed Emperor Heinrich VI. in the document of April 28, 1193 of the Springiersbach Abbey their possessions also in Hundheim; around 1220 Hontheim is mentioned for the first time in the register of archbishop's rights.

In 1325, several nobles took their estates and rights to Hontheim in fief from King John of Bohemia.

In 1346, Peter, Vogt von Carden, sold his estates in Hontheim and Krinkhof to Archbishop Balduin.

In 1366 Archbishop Kuno II approved a settlement between the nunnery of Marienburg and the communities of Hontheim, Wispelt and Krinkhof because of the grazing rights of the monastery Bonsbeuern. From 1794 Hontheim was under French rule, and in 1815 the city was assigned to the Kingdom of Prussia at the Congress of Vienna.

Since 1946 it has been part of the then newly formed state of Rhineland-Palatinate."
