It is not possible to determine exactly when Wiesenburg Castle was founded. According to the Niederwerrn chronicle, Niederwerrn was home to “the castle” in 1252. Niederwerrn was first mentioned in a document on June 17, 1137 with the castle. According to the historian Gerhard Bach, the castle was built in 1236 at the earliest, probably on behalf of the Diocese of Würzburg, and was then owned by various knight families such as the Lords of Wenkheim
