The dune of golden beige sand that suddenly appears in the forest was probably once a sand hollow.

Between the Kleinen- and Großer Tännigweiher on the passing hiking trail (Auenwaldweg) lies the drifting sand dune Tännig, as a small dune field in a larger, former mining area of Pleistocene drifting sand.
During the cold periods of the last 2.6 million years, westerly winds deposited the sand from the alluvial plain of the Main west of the Schwebheim Forest.
As a protected part of the landscape, the dune is under special protection.
