The artwork was created by the sculptor Helen Schou and unveiled in 1955. Helen Schou (1905–2006) worked on the statue for twelve years (from 1944). Christian X was King of Denmark from 1912 to 1947 and a symbol of resistance: during the German occupation (1940–1945), he rode daily
without a bodyguard through Copenhagen, which made him a national symbol
of bravery. Really first-class!
