The castle in Barciany is an impressive example of Gothic Teutonic architecture from the 14th century, located on a small hill surrounded by former marshes. Although it lacks tall towers, it has retained its massive shape and defensive character, making it an interesting testimony to the evolution of monastic castles. After the war, it served economic functions and is currently closed to visitors, although its silhouette can be admired from the outside. The castle is easy to reach by bike, it is worth planning a short stop here for photos and to learn the history of the place.

Based on the records of the chronicler Wigand of Marburg, we can determine the approximate time of commencement of the construction of the brick castle, which, by the decision of the Grand Master Winrych von Kniprode, was to replace the existing watchtower, becoming at the same time the seat of the commander and his administrative centre. The first works probably began before 1380, and their entirety was closed in three stages lasting until the 1420s. The first stage ended around 1390 with the erection of the peripheral walls and the construction of the eastern wing to the height of the first floor. In the second phase, dated from the years 1390–1400, a three-story northern wing was built, the defensive walls and the eastern building were also raised by adding a storey for storage and defense, and the foundations for another, western wing of the castle were poured. The third period included the construction of the western wing (not completed) and two corner towers: a round one and a square one, the latter of which was never completed.

The castle remained the seat of the procurator and, being subordinate to the commandry in Ryn, it gained great military significance as an important point of departure for neighbouring Lithuania. In 1455, at the beginning of the Thirteen Years' War, it was burned down, and later captured several times by various armies, and even by peasants, who in 1458 took over the fortress without defenders by force of arms. After the secularisation of the Teutonic Order, Barciany became the centre of landed estates managed by the princely starosts, and the castle became their seat. In subsequent years, already playing an economic role only, the complex was rebuilt and modernized several times, partially blurring its military features in favor of functionality: in this way, in place of the demolished wing by the western wall, the royal master Blasius Berwart of Königsberg built a granary at the end of the 16th century, and two centuries later a small utility building was added to the southern wall.

Beautiful Gothic castle from the 14th century. Unfortunately, it is currently abandoned.
