With an area of around 7500 hectares, the Lüßwald in the Südheide is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. When heathland farming was at its peak and the heathlands stretched to the horizon, this forest was not cleared as the "Royal Lumberjack". The forest was a hunting area and was therefore hardly used for forestry purposes. Accordingly, the forest still presents itself as quite unspoilt and with some mighty giant trees.

The Lüßwald is an approximately 7,500 hectare large mixed forest in the village of Unterlüß in the Lüneburg Heath, which belongs to the municipality of Südheide. It takes its name from the Lüß and is part of one of the largest contiguous forest areas in Germany. Parts of the Lüßwald lie in the landscape protection area Südheide as well as in the almost congruent nature park Südheide. A 170-hectare part of the forest is designated as a Lünsholz nature reserve.
