The origin of Wildenstein Castle is based on the dispute between the Archbishopric of Mainz and the Counts of Rieneck between 1260 and 1271. It was about supremacy in the western Spessart. The Counts of Rieneck intended to expand their territory in this area by developing clearings, building settlements and, above all, castles. This attempt failed. Together with the Counts of Hanau and Erbach, Rieneck tried to expand its power base, which, however, led to the Rieneck rulers being divided up after they died out in 1559. The Counts of Erbach inherited the territory around Wildenstein. The association "Burgfreunde Wildenstein" has been doing a great deal for the renovation of the badly damaged ruins for several years.
