117 years ago, in 1895, the Friends of Nature were founded in Vienna. An association was formed that wanted to enable working-class families to spend their free time in nature.

At that time the forest was mostly private property of the princes and the propertied class. Entering without express permission, or even use, was forbidden under penalty of punishment. The traditional greeting of nature lovers "Berg Frei" (mountain free) also dates back to this time, which meant no less than an invitation to class warfare.

The movement spread rapidly. In order to be independent, the Friends of Nature erected their own shelters and hikers' homes. This was the beginning of the NaturFreunde house group, which now includes more than 1000 houses all over the world. Meetings were organized where workers received political training and education.

In 1905 the first German local group was formed in Munich. As a result, local groups of Friends of Nature emerged in many places in Germany.
