Flood retention basin Mengede / Castrop-Rauxel (HRB Mengede) with observation tower
Although the flood retention basin Mengede / Castrop-Rauxel will once again be a major construction site for connecting the pools - it already seems more like a nature reserve than an actual technical facility. The pools fit well into the landscape, the greenery now offers a magnificent sight and the plant now attracts ornithologists to extensive observation expeditions. Although the lookout tower is apparently always locked, it offers a pleasant resting place at the foot of it, with some benches and views over the pools, which is now well accepted by walkers and cyclists.
The flood protection system has developed into a breeding ground for numerous animal and especially bird species and is located in the protected landscape areas LSG Brueninghausen / LSG Emscherniederung between the nature conservation areas NSG Beerenbruch / NSG Mengeder Heide. The municipality of Mengede is already one of the most valuable areas of Dortmund from the point of view of landscape and nature conservation.
