The outdoor museum is divided into five different neighborhoods. At the center is a village, laid out in situations of villages around the Zuiderzee with mainly authentic (and a few copied) buildings from the former Zuiderzee and Wadden area. Various old towns and villages on the Zuiderzee have been used as examples for the neighborhoods. Many of the buildings in the various neighborhoods also come from the village or town that the neighborhood depicts. A nature reserve has been created on the grounds of the outdoor museum, starting at the lime kilns. The contour of a duck decoy has been laid in the nature reserve. Recognizable is the cage forest, the cage plas, four catch pipes and a cage house. The other characteristic elements such as the screens, the capture cages etc. were never laid in and around the cage when the outdoor museum was built.
