Recently restored, the Maximilian Tower reminds us of the time when Venice was under the Habsburg domination. It was in fact built around the mid-nineteenth century by the Austrians, when the island of Sant'Erasmo was still on the coast line. Today it houses a dozen exhibition rooms and is one of the few surviving fortifications built on this round plan model, as this arrangement soon proved ineffective.

Road cycling

It is also called Forte Massimiliano or Forte Sant’Erasmo, it was built by the Austrians in the first half of the 1800s, when Venice was ceded by Napoleon to Austria. It initially served as the southern defense of the island and, during World War II, was used as an anti-aircraft position.
