Dadizele has been a well-known place of pilgrimage since the 15th century. Pilgrims go there to worship the alabaster statue of Our Lady and Child.Pope Leo XIII granted the status of basilica to the church in 1882: next to the Chapel of the Holy Blood in Bruges, the only basilica in the diocese.
