At one time, Dinorwic Slate Quarry was one of the biggest quarries in Wales, employing more than 3,000 men at one stage. Slate transformed the tranquil mountain areas of North Wales, creating vibrant cultural communities, quarries, and rubble heaps. It was a vast, interconnected industrial landscape of mine workings and tram lines. It was open from the 1770’s until it closed in 1969. The slate industry has played an extensive part in Welsh culture, and 'The Slate Landscape of Northwest Wales' was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2021. There are six areas in total, Dinorwic Quarry being one of them.
