Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
From the Kampmannbrücke (currently under construction) to the Marie-Juchacz-Straße bridge, the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route crosses an important nature reserve: the Heisinger Ruhraue, an EU protected area under the Fauna Flora Habitat Directive. Here, the cyclist experiences an intact floodplain landscape with numerous old waters and a variety of wetland biotopes, which provide a habitat for about 60 breeding and up to 50 guest bird species as well as rare species of dragonflies and amphibians. Occasionally, Nutrias show up in the altars.
