Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
In my opinion, one of the most beautiful sections along the Ruhr. You cycle over the paved bike path through a wetland, consisting of small ponds and tributaries of the Ruhr, crosses small bridges and cross repeatedly small forest pieces. It could go on like this forever.

The nature reserve "Heisinger Ruhraue" unites old waters of the Ruhr and wetlands, which were created by subsidence. Numerous species of birds, insects and amphibians are at home here or visit the floodplains temporarily.

From the Kampmannbrücke (currently under construction) to the bridge on Marie-Juchacz-Straße, the Ruhrtalradweg crosses an important nature reserve: the Heisinger Ruhraue, which is also an EU protected area under the Fauna-Flora-Habitat Directive. Here the cyclists experience: inside an intact floodplain landscape with a number of backwaters and a large number of wetland biotopes that provide a habitat for around 60 breeding and up to 50 guest bird species as well as rare dragonfly and amphibian species. Occasionally nutrias show up in the oxbow lakes.
