"May God help you to understand what it means to fight here and near. To understand how deep and how wide the pain is, you must also understand the difference between those who suffered and those who are far away to watch the suffering, to be understood."

Info point 18 on the path of remembrance is a memorial stone for the US 2nd and 99th Infantry Divisions.

When the Ardennes offensive began on December 16, 1944, Rocherath-Krinkelt was right in the attacking area of the German divisions (277th Volksgrenadiers and 12th SS Panzers), which were to force a breakthrough in the direction of Elsenborn and Liège.

Rocherath-Krinkelt was held by the soldiers of the 2nd and 99th Infantry Divisions until a new line of defense was established in front of Elsenborn on December 20. The two monuments commemorate the costly defense of the town by the 2nd and 99th US Infantry Divisions. Source: rocherath-krinkelt.be/us-memorial

On the way in the German-Belgian border area of the "Hohe Fens / Eifel Nature Park", the hiker not only encounters the beautiful nature, but also time and again signposts and information boards of the "Sentier du souvenir" ("Path of Remembrance"). This is a cross-border community project that – over a total length of 94 kilometers, mainly along the former West Wall – reminds of the horrors of war and tyranny and reminds each generation anew to preserve peace (still a very important and, if we look at Eastern Europe, highly topical issue).

Particularly striking (or better: noteworthy) stations on this "path of remembrance" are marked with an information board - an invitation to pause on one's own (life) path.
