The Ulu Cami (Great Mosque) Mosque, also known as the Ramazanogullari Mosque, is located on Kizilay Street in the Seyhan district of Adana. The entire complex, formerly consisting of the mosque, a madrasa (Koran school), a mausoleum (Halil Bey's tomb) and a harem palace, was built between 1509 and 1541 on behalf of Halil Bey. The mosque is famous for its walls decorated with black and white marble and the tile ornaments in which the colors turquoise, navy and red dominate on the white background. Above the western gate there is a cupola and an inscription with two serpent reliefs. The minaret, decorated with colorful pictures, is structured by numerous colored stone bands. The building suffered damage during the Adana-Ceyhan earthquake in 1998 and was restored between 1998 and 2004. Since the completion of the repair work, the church has been open to visitors outside of prayer times.
