The bridge crosses the Ceyhan (Ancient Pyramus) between Yakapınar (Ancient Mopsuestia) and Geçitli.

In the Middle Ages, Mopsuestia was a large city and the bridge was built on one of the busiest trade routes to the east. It was commissioned by the Roman Emperor Flavius Julius Constantius (better known as Constantius II) in the fourth century. It was restored by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I in the sixth century. It was renovated again in 743 and 840. The bridge suffered damage in the 1998 Adana - Ceyhan earthquake.

According to a popular legend, Luqman, having discovered the Elixir of Life, dropped the receipt and herbs from Misis Bridge. Luqman had researched for years and found a recipe for immortality from 200 plants, the recipe in hand he wanted to cross the bridge. Then the devil came and shoved the recipe (book) out of his hand and threw it in the Misis.
