The Alster-Beste Canal was a navigable connection between Hamburg and Lübeck in the 16th century and is even officially called the Alster-Trave Canal. This Hamburg bad investment was only in operation for about 50 years because the canal did not carry enough water.

In the middle of the 15th century, Hamburg and Lübeck came up with the plan to connect the two Hanseatic cities with a waterway. In 1448, Hamburg concluded a contract with the sovereign Duke Adolf VIII (1401 – 1459), the last of Schauenburg. Construction began in the same year. In order to keep the canal route, which was difficult to build, as short as possible, it was decided to go a long way. In the west, 40 kilometers of the Alster were to be used. East of the watershed near Sülfeld over 15 kilometers is the Beste, which flows into the Trave near Oldesloe 28 kilometers from Lübeck. With a total distance of 91 kilometers, only eight kilometers of canal had to be dug at great expense. However, there were large differences in altitude to be overcome. From Hamburg to the watershed it was 28 meters. From there to the Baltic Sea, the drop is 33 meters.
