The Alcazaba de Antequera is a 14th-century Moorish fortress located in the heart of the Andalusian town of Antequera. Built on the remains of an ancient Roman settlement, it served as a defensive structure protecting the town and the surrounding valley during Muslim rule. After the Christian conquest in 1410 by Infante Ferdinand of Castile, the fortress became an important strategic point in the Kingdom of Castile. Particularly impressive is the mighty Torre del Homenaje, one of the largest keeps in Andalusia. From its top, one can enjoy sweeping views over the town, the Peña de los Enamorados rock, and the surrounding countryside. Later, the tower was supplemented with a bell tower with a large bell dating from 1582. Remains of residential buildings, cisterns, and fortifications are still preserved within the walls. Today, the Alcazaba can be visited and, with its panoramic views and audio guides, offers a fascinating insight into the history of Antequera and Andalusia.
