The Basilica of Our Lady of Mercy and Saint Michael the Archangel (in Catalan, Basílica de la Mare de Déu de la Mercè i Sant Miquel Arcàngel), known simply as Basilica de la Merced (Basílica de la Mercè), is a church of Baroque located in the Plaza de la Merced, in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona. It was built between 1765 and 1775, being the work of the Catalan architect José Mas Dordal. It is dedicated to the Virgen de la Merced as patron saint of the diocese of Barcelona, being one of the most representative churches of Barcelona.

In Barcelona, an absolute highlight is the church La Familia, but also the main shopping street with its shopping center is highly recommended

Regarding the Mother of God, Mary, who shares the patronage with the Archangel Michael, here is the following thought from Albino Luciani, from his time as Patriarch of Venice (later he became Pope John Paul I):
"A privileged place is reserved in the Bible for Mary, who was chosen to become the Mother of God and to participate positively in the Incarnation and Redemption. In the past, the emphasis was primarily on the grace of divine election. Today, Mary's response is also highlighted, her yes, or better said, her 'active and responsible consent'. A responsible and courageous yes to a task that involved the whole world..."

This church was dedicated to the Mother of God, Mary, and to the Archangel Michael. His name (from the Hebrew language) means "Who is like God?" He is often depicted in paintings or as a statue with a flaming sword, occasionally with a lance. Michael is - along with Raphael and Gabriel, and occasionally Uriel is also included - one of the three or four archangels who (according to human belief) occupy the highest rank in the heavenly hierarchy of angelic beings. Their common feast day in the calendar of saints is September 29th.
