The tunnel is located at the corner of Elbchaussee/Elbschloßstraße in Nienstedten. Anyone who enters it from the Elbe beach first reaches the "Day" area, then comes the "Blue Hour", "Night" and finally "Dawn". All areas are designed in extremely different colors. Plants and insects that occur on the Elbchaussee are also shown.

The Elbschlosstunnel has been able to be used as a fast and barrier-free connection since 1984 without having to cross the busy Elbchaussee.
As part of the EU Interreg project “LUCIA”, a new wall design was designed in 2020 that completely reinterprets the tunnel. Three young artists from Hamburg developed the motif of the “day-night journey,” which runs along the tunnel walls and arches. The motifs take up the flora and fauna of the surrounding area and give the topic of light a new meaning. A species protection report has shown that rare moths and bats live in the upper part of the access. Species protection concerns were therefore taken into account when designing the light and implemented for the barrier-free entrance.
