The Karol Wojtyla urban park is located in the city center, near the railway station and the main arteries of the city. It is bordered on the entire north side by via Lorenzo Scillitani and on the opposite side by via Celestino Galliani; the main entrance opens onto Piazza Cavour. Rectangular in shape, the garden extends for about 1000 meters in length and over 50 meters in width; it is entirely flat with the exception of the easternmost area, known as Boschetto, which is accessed by means of ramps that cover 5-6 meters in altitude. Entirely fenced, it is accessible during the opening hours to the public. It is owned by the Municipality of Foggia and protected by archaeological constraints pursuant to law 1089 / '39 (referring to the neighboring area of the former racecourse, occupied by a Neolithic entrenched village).
During the bombings of the Second World War in 1943, the Pronaos of the Villa, designed by the architect Luigi Oberty, with its 28 Gothic-style columns, was damaged to the point of having to rebuild it, backed a few meters from its original position.
In 1827 the works were completed and the result achieved: a majestic pronaos marks the main entrance, an iron gate encloses the entire garden, the elegant internal paths are articulated and divided according to a precise geometric design. The area of the Boschetto, the Royal company of Capitanata establishes a botanical garden, which includes over 500 species of plants; a small Ionic-style temple was built to crown the Boschetto hill, inspired by the one in the Real Villa in Naples; an orchestra is built, a stable stage for orchestral performances; at the foot of the Boschetto an artificial lake is created, enriched by a small waterfall.
