This facility was built at the instigation and on behalf of the city of Augustusburg in 2018 and inaugurated in May 2019. The garden pays homage to the work of the Electress Anna of Saxony, who, among other things, devoted herself to herbalism. The path through the garden completes a circular route around Augustusburg Castle and creates another connection between the historic old town and the castle.
In the garden, several planting beds have been planted thematically with medicinal herbs and kitchen herbs. The plants themselves were selected after research in historical archives and already played a role in Anna's time. Often, as you can see from the inscriptions on the name tags, under other names, which of course you would not know them by today. The planting of old fruit trees, on the other hand, pays tribute to Elector Augustus of Saxony. He had dedicated himself to the cultivation and refinement of fruit. It should become a building block for the nutrition of his subjects. It can only be assumed whether fruit was also cultivated here in Augustusburg, since there was probably a gardener at court. On the other hand, it is documented from old correspondence between Anna and the master builder Hieronymus Lotter that there must have been a herb garden here in the castle. This was probably located in what is now the castle courtyard.
The path through the garden leads from the historic old town, beginning behind the town hall (tourist information) to the entrance to the rear courtyard. In the garden, benches invite you to linger and you can enjoy a wonderful view. Guided tours of herbs are offered on request.
The facility was funded by the East Common Task, for which the city of Augustusburg is very grateful. The garden is an enrichment of the historic townscape and should help to make history come alive. The Kleinstadtmenschen.de project contributes further building blocks. If you like, you can have contemporary witnesses tell you about the history of the city. You will rediscover Augustusburg in a completely new way.
