This is a water pumping windmill. The construction style is of the 16th/17th century; only the cap and the sails rotate. The big wheel close to the ground is used to wind a cable that helps rotate the cap. See photos for detail.

This watermill was built in 1722 to replace its predecessor, a burnt-down seesaw mill. The mill was fully operational until 1965 and drained the Rijnenburgerpolder.

In the mill itself is a small house that was inhabited until 1931. After that, a miller's house was built next to the mill. This house ("De Vijfde Wiek") is currently rented out as a holiday home.

The mill still runs regularly and thus ensures that the water in the adjacent district is refreshed.

Since December 16, 2013, the mill has been owned by the Rijnenburgermolen Foundation and has the status of a national monument.

The Rijnenburgermolen in Hazerswoude-Rijndijk (municipality of Alphen aan den Rijn) is a polder mill built in 1722 to replace a burnt-out seesaw mill. The mill drained the Rijnenburgerpolder and was fully operational until 1965. There is a small house in the mill itself, but a house has also been built next to the mill. The water is raised using an iron paddle wheel. Major maintenance was carried out on the mill in 2014. The mill is currently back in full operation.
The mill has been owned by the Rijnenburgermolen Foundation since December 16, 2013.
