    Hamburg is the seat of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ISGH), which was founded on December 10, 1982 on the basis of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.

    The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea consists of 21 judges who are elected by the contracting parties for nine-year terms. Re-election is possible. One third of the judging panel is re-elected every three years. Albert J. Hoffmann from South Africa has been the President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea since October 2020.
