The lake was created in the early 1960s as part of the construction of the Federal Motorway 1. Sand was mined there until 1966.

After the sand extraction had ended, a campsite was set up around the lake, which was already used as a bathing lake during mining activities in the summer months. The lake, which is located in an agricultural area, is managed by the operator of the campsite. Sanitary facilities, a restaurant and a snack are available. There is a large beach area on the north bank. There are sunbathing lawns around the lake. A bathing island is anchored in the lake.

In the summer months, swimming is monitored by the German Life Saving Society.
