Monument in honor of the Tiense fallen and deportees of WWI.

The gilded statue was quickly nicknamed the 'golden lady' or the 'golden woman' in Tienen. Because of the fluttering robes, the wings and the light-footed aspect of the image, Nike is also popularly referred to as the 'danseuse' or the 'flying child'.

The monument in honour of the Tienen fallen and deported soldiers of the First World War is a joint work of sculptor Egide Rombaux (Schaarbeek 1863-1942 Ukkel) and architect Léon Govaerts (Sint-Joost-ten-Node 1860-1930 Sint-Gillis) and was initiated by the city of Tienen.

Attended by Crown Prince Leopold, the monument was inaugurated with great pomp on 27 May 1923.

Egide Rombaux studied at the Royal Academy of Brussels. He worked in the studio of Albert Desenfans (1845-1938), took evening classes with Charles Van der Stappen (1843-1910) and is also said to have worked with sculptor Jef Lambeaux (1852-1908), who had a great influence on him. After the First World War he worked with Léon Govaerts on the restoration of the statues on the Grote Markt in Leuven.

War memorial in blue stone and gilded bronze, designed as a triumphal column, crowned by a sculpture. The war memorial, placed on a four-step platform, is formed by a square base, on which a four-lobed column, composed of cannon barrels with the inscriptions "LIEGE", "HAELEN", "HOUTHEM" and "YSER", referring to the important battles of the initial offensive in 1914. At the foot of the column lies a bound laurel wreath against which four flaming cannonballs. On the flaming smoke, which spews from the mouths of the cannons, lies the world from which the winged woman, referring to the goddess of victory Nike, is born. She carries a laurel branch in her left hand, has truncated wings and stands - in a walking position - on a globe. In addition to the names of civilian and military victims, the plinth bears a medallion with the portrait of Albert I between the date "1914/ 1918" (front) and the inscriptions - in bronze letters - "AAN ONSZE DAPPEREN VOOR/ HET VADERLAND GESTORVEN" (left) and "A NOS BRAVES MORTS/ POUR LA PATRIE" (right).
