From this location you have a nice and clear view of the Main Front.
Historical interpretation: All Brialmont fortresses - FORTS 1 to 8 were built according to the same plan except for a few details; they are almost trapezoidal and are surrounded by a wide ring moat. The main front was protected by the caponier, an islet facing the enemy consisting of two bombproof flanks and a triangle in which a central corridor connected with the batteries, storage areas and so on. The caponier is connected to the main front by a brick bridge.
In the main front, opening onto an open space, quarters were accommodated for the soldiers and non-commissioned officers. The various rooms are connected by a gallery, and a central corridor leads to the caponier.
On both sides of the main front, at the corners of the trapezoid, are the half caponiers, consisting of a corridor and batteries. The most impressive part of the fortress is the inner fortress, formed by two semicircles with a central courtyard. Storage areas and troop rooms were housed on the ground and first floors.Fort 8 is the last fort of the forward belt of fortresses around Antwerp, designed by Alexis Henri Brialmont, completed in 1868.
